I listened to the joe Brinton Mixdown Podcast. I chose this one because the description specifically said ‘This podcast interviews a geological engineer and coal miner about how he uses writing as an engineer.’ which is exactly what the writing prompt is asking about. My honest opinion on the podcast was that it had a few good points with lots of rambling. The line that stuck with me the most is, ‘You can’t be a successful engineer or scientist without the ability to communicate what you know to others.’. When I heard this I was thinking,’Damn thats kinda true’. In the workforce, 99% of the time you will be coloborating with others or working under others in which case it is a necesity to communicate what you know to others. I would define the role writing has in engineering as is it being one of the strongest ways to exchange information with others. Another good point made was precision in writing. When writing anything you want to know who your audience is and carefully draft the report or intructions to said audience. Only with experience and practice does this specific skill improve. Since we as students engage in writing practices more often than someone who goes straight into the workforce, we have the ability to better gather information and then share said information in the form of writing. The podcast did change my view on writing as I viewed it as something seemingly unneccesary in engineering yet the podcast highlights why writing is one of the most critical skills in engineering.
